Reading the stars
ICT's criteria build each white-star level on the one before: for two stars and up, the text says a star is recommended when the beach meets the previous level's requirements plus the new criteria. One star needs 90% to 100% of the base points, in a base score where seawater quality carries 35% of the weight. The added criteria run from warning signs and weekend lifeguards at two stars to accessible parking, beach ramps or mats and tourist police at five.
The coloured stars are separate from that ladder. Each one recognizes a different effort by the beach committee: coastal safety training (pink), land-based pollution sources (gold), the Ecolones Program (silver), sustainable homes (green) and animal-welfare outreach (orange). ICT gives the award annually, so a star count belongs to the year of the list.
